Banana Leaf Boy is the alter ego of José Miranda, a kid from Acapulco, Guerrero that arrived in the U.S. at the age of 12, and in the same tune as artists such as Cuco, picked up his guitar to express the dreaming nostalgia that is embedded in the DNA of young latinos across America.
Inspired by corners of music that go all the way from Stereolab to Banda Machos, and from Pet Shop Boys to Los Prisioneros, after thousands of hours making music from his bedroom, in 2020 he started to release his music to the rest of the world with his debut EP Live Transmission from the Brown Starship. The eight-track live album boasts a unique blend of rock and roll, and the soulful Mexican sound that is deeply ingrained in Southern California's culture.
Followed by his single "Adios" produced by renowned DJ and cumbia specialist G-Flux, Banana Leaf Boy cemented his presence both regionally and internationally, paying homage to the golden era of the 80s with a futuristic cumbia rebajada sound.
After performing at SXSW in 2023, he released his two most ambitious singles, Malo Para Mí and I Want 2. Both songs were expertly crafted at The Shelter Studios under the production helm of Cesar Mejia (Herbie Hancock, Tropa Magica, Los Lobos). Featuring outstanding performances by Fredo Ortiz (Ozomatli, Beastie Boys), Juan Perez and Danilo “Danny” Lozano (Celia Cruz, Poncho Sanchez), these tracks showcase the talents of world-class musicians, and Banana Leaf Boy’s gifted songwriting.
