But he understood his own mission remarkably well and has remained undaunted by the hype. His second, double-length long-player Heaven and Earth was announced via tweet: \"The Earth side.represents the world as I see it outwardly, the world that I am part of. The Heaven side.represents the world as I see it inwardly, the world that is a part of me.\" Washington reassembled his Next Step band -- which includes bassists Miles Mosely and Stephen \"Thundercat\" Bruner, drummers Ronald Bruner, Jr. and Tony Austin, trombonist Ryan Porter, pianist Cameron Graves, keyboardist Brandon Coleman, and vocalist Patrice Quinn -- supplemented by a jazz orchestra, West Coast Get Down, a symphony orchestra, and choir. Heaven and Earth is a major dose of Afro-Futurism. Earth opens with a killer cover of the theme from Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, retitled in plural here. Quinn and Dwight Trible duet on lead vocals backed by a soaring, sweeping choir atop a cooking Latin jazz groove complete with montunos from Graves and a raw-boned solo from Washington (who is on fire throughout). The other cover is a funky take on Freddie Hubbard's \"Hub-Tones,\" with layers of propulsive Latin rhythms. Dontae Winslow's jagged trumpet solo cuts across the mix before Washington's tenor answers. Of the originals, \"Connections\" is a space jazz embrace of hard bop and 20th century West Coast jazz, with great solos from Porter and Winslow, while \"Testify\" owes as much to Caribbean grooves and soul as jazz. Heaven commences with the spectral \"The Space Traveler's Lullaby,\" with its gorgeous warm brass and reeds, swelling symphony strings, and soaring wordless chorus sounds like the Gil Evans and Sun Ra orchestras playing together. \"Vi Lua Vi Sol\" features a vocoder vocal from Coleman, with Porter blowing fills and a beefy solo, swooping synth lines atop Afrobeat drumming, and a popping upright bassline. The breaks and future funk of \"Street Fighter Mas\" owes equally to Miles Davis, Lamar, and Earth Wind and Fire as the choir extrapolates on the harmonics before Washington's skittering R\u0026amp;B-drenched solo. \"Song for the Fallen\" weds angular avant-jazz and future funk to wiry fusion and a multivalent rhythmic attack -- with the choir adding a celestial bent. Heaven and Earth is more a refinement of the ideas expressed on The Epic than an entirely new paradigm. There is less wandering, more focus, more inquiry and directed movement, as well as an abundance of colorful tonal and harmonic contrasts. More than anything else, it establishes Washington as a composer and arranger of dizzying potential and still underscores his twin rep as a soloist and jazz conceptualist. Disregard the context and Oxnard is simply the follow-up to Malibu, lyrically a little deeper and sonically a bit richer, though a little less novel. It happens to bare Dre's name as executive producer and mixing engineer, and as co-producer of four tracks, three of which are rhythmically choppy backdrops for a peacocking, raspy Paak, basking in affluence, berating rappers, and \"fuckin' up the weekend\" as he flashes his million-dollar grin. The dazzling and layered fourth Dre collaboration, \"Cheers,\" also involves Q-Tip behind the board and in the booth, with Paak working through the loss of Mac Miller in poignant verses and a stirring chorus. Other than that track, embedded references to issues ranging from police brutality to personal troubles, and the post-11\/8 \"6 Summers\" -- where anti-Trump taunts are balanced by incisions like \"There's money to be made in a killing spree\" -- Oxnard is about highly detailed hijinks and romantic conflicts. It's front-loaded with a kind of vehicular action-adventure mini-suite, beginning in sweeping blaxploitation style with help from Kadhja Bonet's voice and strings, continuing with the elegant if lascivious pit stop \"Headlow,\" and climaxing with \"Tints,\" glistening and twisting modern synth-funk fortified by a duly animated Kendrick Lamar verse. Jack White adds some of his guitar heroics on a few tracks and Elton John makes a cameo as well, singing the hook of the very odd \"Solid Wall of Sound.\" The sheer number of guests, the long wait since their last album, the shifting tides of hip hop -- all these factors could have led to We Got It being a disappointment. Amazingly, it turns out to be almost the exact opposite. Thanks to Q-Tip's visionary and pleasingly weird production, which draws from golden age hip-hop, old-school jazz, odd samples, dub reggae, and interplanetary electro, the fact the neither he nor Phife have lost even a small percentage of a step, and the seamlessly integrated contributions from the guests (especially Paak on \"Moving Backwards\"), the album is vibrant, intense, and alive. The group sound like they're having a blast on party songs like \"The Donald\" or the buoyant \"Dis Generation,\" get mad as hell on tracks like \"Space Program\" and \"We the People,\" and generally come off like they're still the greatest. This is no nostalgia trip or callous comeback. It's a giant exclamation point on the end of a brilliant career. That comfortable, familial atmosphere is one of the best things about Django and Jimmie and extends far beyond the marquee names; the studio pros, friends, family, and fellow travelers who support Willie and Merle help give this a warm, worn-in feel that's appealing on its own terms. As comforting as the vibe is, it's the singers and their songs that linger.
