NEVER LET ME DOWN found Bowie writing or co-writing everything with the exception of Iggy Pop's \"Bang Bang.\" Songs such as \"Day-In Day-Out\" and \"Time Will Crawl\" were perfect Bowie songs that worked opposite ends of the spectrum; the everyday reality of a struggling woman living on the periphery of society versus the ambiguity of time itself. Although the creamy synths and slick production are occasional reminders that NLMD was cut in the '80s, these flourishes work especially well on \"Zeroes\" and the title track. Going into the merits of the tracks isn't necessary; there's not a clunker to be found in the Smiths's discography. The funny, annoying, and\/or incredible thing about both the Smiths and Morrissey is that so many songs (singles or B-sides) make appearances on so many different albums. Any die-hard fan of the Smiths is going to want or need both albums, just to have a complete collection of releases (not songs). Even then, there's going to be much repetition across the actual full-length albums and best-of collections. If an album called \"The Bombs Won't Listen\" or \"Louder Than the World\" was to be released tomorrow, there'd be an audience for it; granted, it would be a smaller audience than in the heyday of the Smiths. Many people consider the Morrissey\/Marr duo to be the last great songwriting team; any release by the Smiths is indispensable to this audience. Brian Eno once said that only a hundred people bought Velvet Underground records when they first came out, but those hundred people all went out and formed their own bands. The rest, of course, is history; the Velvet Underground was the catalyst that helped spark punk rock, and began the growth of an alternative branch within rock and roll's grand family tree. VU's was an unparalleled glimpse into the Summer Of Love's alter ego, complete with graphic, unapologetic descriptions of intravenous drug-use and risque sexual situations. Their 1967 debut, VELVET UNDERGROUND \u0026amp; NICO, was a tour de force that may never be equaled for its sheer radicalism in the face of rock convention. The Velvet Underground also mapped out unconquered sonic territories. Bassist John Cale was weaned on deconstructing classical theory--the perfect avant-garde foil to help bring Reed's terse songs to life. Even more noticeable when he would switch to electric viola, Cale's sound evoked the terror of Reed's compositions, with the bowed strings screeching like a runaway subway car. Drummer Maureen Tucker played like no one before her. The frustration of putting something out that is artistically brilliant has a particular significance, as music and film go hand in hand. The film dialogue is either hilarious or it will leave you cold. The former is the general consensus. Zappa was so far ahead that his earth life ended before we caught up with him. By this point, Vile has settled into the finer points of his persona, that of the stony but observant psychic drifter, grinning through his disarming rock repetitions with equal parts humor, bite, and guitar solos. He wears all of it confidently on the songs where he can explore, notably the almost ten-minute two-chord ramble of \"Bassackwards.\" The song stealthily accumulates layers of synths, piano, and guitar textures as Vile strolls in a disoriented lyrical fog, evoking images of beaches, time passing, and stilted attempts at communicating. That the several songs stretching past the ten-minute mark can stay engaging and even exciting at such lengths is a testament to how comfortable the songwriter has grown in his craft. At almost 11 minutes, the title track is another unlikely standout, a dusty old-timey loop building patiently into an epic journey that includes Mary Lattimore's plaintive harp and Cass McCombs providing harmonies to Vile's yo-yoing vocal melodies and stream-of-consciousness lyrical sprawl. The almost mantra-like tune unfolds into subdued horn arrangements that float along with dreamy guitar lines. The song takes a while to get where it's going, but all is revealed in time. If anything, the filler on Bottle It In happens in the more compact numbers. At well over an hour running time, shorter tunes like the breezy AM radio-modeled \"Rollin with the Flow\" and the upbeat rocker \"Yeah Bones\" feel formulaic and out of place next to more experimentally structured fare. If the flow of the album can sometimes feel longwinded, the fluid approach to instrumentation means there's always a new detail around the corner for those paying attention. Bass synths growl playfully on \"Check Baby,\" a film of melodic feedback coats the ending of \"Mutinies,\" and a chorus of drunken friends comes from out of nowhere to help sing the good-natured lovefest of \"One Trick Ponies.\" While sometimes disjointed or lingering, Bottle It In finds Vile's production at its most colorful and curious. Making the most of the various environments where it was recorded, the album feels like a travel diary picked up sporadically along the way. Just how hard it can be to shake bad habits -- or people -- is one of the Kills' prime fixations, whether it's the way Mosshart makes die-hard commitment sound like a kind of rebellion on \"Heart of a Dog\" or the defiant confessions of \"Hard Habit to Break.\" The duo does find ways to change and grow in the face of trauma, however. Instead of returning to Key Club Studio, where they made many of their previous albums, they recorded Ash \u0026amp; Ice in a rented house in Los Angeles and New York City's Electric Lady Studios. These new locales led to sounds both familiar and different: at times, the album's glowering vibe recalls the Dead Weather (interestingly, that group's 2015 album, Dodge and Burn, borrowed more than a little of the Kills' usual fire). Elsewhere, the hushed introspection of \"Let It Drop\" and \"Echo Home\" evokes the xx, another group that can make guitars and a drum machine speak volumes. Ash \u0026amp; Ice is also the Kills' most confessional set of songs, with \"Days of Why and How\" and \"That Love\" making the most of Mosshart's gorgeously raw vocals. Sometimes, the duo's soul-searching is too insular for its own good, and the revved-up finale, \"Whirling Eye,\" feels like it's from a different album, but more often than not the Kills turn what could be seen as weakness into artistic strength.
